The Hit List - Scents and Sensitivity

I’m ultra-sensitive. Like tears at the drop of a hat sensitive. My feelings are easily hurt, so my parents labeled me the “crybaby.” Learning how not to take every little thing personally has been a lifetime lesson. Other sensitives know what I’m talking about.

Feelings are not the only things that tend to be tender. I’m also sensitive to fabric (cannot do anything itchy or too tight), bright lights, mold (if I see mold, I get queasy), loud anything (especially eating), and smells.

In the past year, I’ve purchased two perfumes and a set of samples. Unfortunately, none of it worked for me. It might be my body chemistry (ginger orange, which is a no-brainer for every human I know, smells horrible on me). Or perhaps it’s my sensitivity to certain odors (powder, vanilla, anything “warm”). Either way, I had to give them all away. Of course, they smelled perfect on the other people. Oh well.

I’m also hypersensitive to other smells: mildew, anything rotting, and body odor. Basically: anything gross. Sometimes, I’ll pick up on a scent that no one else seems to notice. Like the time I smelled a gas leak. Lives saved? Probably!

Perhaps I was a bloodhound in a former life. Heck, if there was a job for a human version, I’d probably be the ideal candidate. But then again, do I really want to sniff out crime scenes and dead bodies? Ugh. Probably not. If I can’t handle a bottle of powdery perfume, I don’t think I’m up for that job.

Of course, this makes me wonder: am I the only one? Are other tender-hearted people also keenly tuned in to every smell? Is this even a thing? Or is this just me? In the meantime, I am on the hunt for the perfect perfume.
