There are times in my life when I’ve held on to a situation for far too long. Sometimes it was out of a sense of duty. Other times, there were circumstances which prevented me from walking away, even when I knew it was good for me to do so. When you hang on to something or someone that needs to go, the ending is rarely clean or positive. There’s always a taint, no matter how gentle your exit.
As I’ve gotten older, it’s been easier to ditch the toxic people, places, and things that don’t fit my life or the way I want to exist in this world. There are still struggles because I want to be a kind person, but sometimes you know when you’re done…and you must move on, even if the other side doesn’t like it.
Recently, I decided it was time to let go of in-person teaching and workshops. It’s been on my mind for a while. Even so, I held on for a little longer, assuming the small voice within telling me to quit was my imagination or something else. Until I could no longer ignore the feeling that it was time. I knew I was done this year.
In business, I follow my instincts. I’m sometimes better at that than following my vibes around friendship (I have a hard time discerning when someone is a frenemy). So I set a date – my workshop in New York, my favorite city in the world, would be the last in-person teaching.
I had the best location and the perfect co-teacher, Sarah Selecky, by my side.
Our workshop filled with the most amazing, soulful, brilliant creatives who were there for the sole purpose of learning how to use tarot for writing. There were no hidden agendas, no power struggles, no egos (something I’ve encountered from time to time in my teaching journey). The day flowed flawlessly with mocktails after class and a private vegan dinner with me, Sarah, and her husband Ryan. It was a high note ending, the kind that only happens when you face the exit with curiosity and acceptance, the most beautiful combo.
My last few days in New York were opportunities to connect with old friends and new, dine in fabulous places, walk around in the rain, laughing at t-shirts with the “c” word and darting into tea shops to get out of the inclement weather. All in all, it was perfect.
It felt like the Universe was acknowledging this was the right decision. I was sent off with joy, love, and a fully belly. I am done. And I know it. And it’s a good, good thing.
