The Hit List - The Age of No Reasons

I remember puberty all too well. Not just those hormonal shifts and awkward bodily changes but also that feeling of alienation.

Too old for kid stuff like dolls and bubblegum, yet too young for those sneaky adult conversations whispered over beer in the kitchen. I wasn’t able to understand the high school girls and their obsessions with Seventeen magazine and pep rallies nor was I able to feel a kinship with girls my own age who fretted over Bonne Bell Lipsmackers and those stupid seventh grade boys with their pimples and Boston t-shirts. (Yes, the band Boston. UGH.)

I felt like an alien in my body and amongst my so-called tribe.

These days, I’m feeing that same vibe. It might be the menopause setting in or it might be something else. I dunno what it is but when I hang out with women my age, I’m find myself out of touch with the conversations about teenage kids and the angst that goes with that. My kids are long past those years so I have nothing to add to those conversations. I really want to talk about hip hop, politics, world events, mystical things, and business.  Most of all business.

So I gravitate to younger women because they seem hip and ambitious. But alas, when the conversations inevitably turn to guys, babies, and sexuality, I’m acutely aware that I’m the old broad in this dynamic, far past that stage when men where a mystery and sexuality something yet to be discovered. Been around that block and then some.

I look to my elders but they are busy with health concerns or grandchildren. Which neither are part of my world at this time. Not sure if I really want either right now. Well, definitely not the health concerns. Grandkids are up for debate.

I am a woman without a tribe at the moment.  A lone wolf that runs with many different packs but really not fitting in with any of them. I’m not sure if this is just a phase…or the way things are.  Heck, maybe it’s always been this way but I was under some illusion that I was fitting in alright. Whatever the case may be, like puberty, all I can do is ride this transition out and stay curious as to what’s on the other side of it. If I’m lucky, my right people will be there, ready to dish about A$AP Rocky, the state of the world, and the latest word on business stuff.

Until then, I ride alone.
