The Hit List - When I was younger

When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to be an adult. Childhood was a drag and I wanted out as soon as possible. I hated being a kid.

Adults got to do all the cool things! Plus, they didn’t have anyone bossing them around. To me, adulthood meant one thing: freedom. I wanted that.

I had lots of notions of what my life would be like as an adult.

I would be a makeup artist, working behind the scenes at all the coolest fashion shows. Naturally, I would live in New York. The men I dated would be exclusively musicians. I would travel the world and never, ever return to this small town hillbilly crap-hole I was forced to inhabit.

My friends would be straight out of Andy Warhol’s Factory. I’d count celebrities, artists, and musical folks amongst my crew.

I would never get married or have kids. I wanted nothing to tie me down, ever.

Life turned out a lot different then those teenage aspirational visions. I did date musicians almost exclusively (normal dudes don’t like chicks like me).  I’m married. In fact, I did it more than once. I have two grown children. I did live in New York for a spell but returned home to take care of an ailing parent. Instead of becoming a makeup artist, I’m a professional tarot reader and author. I’ve traveled all over the United States and parts of Canada. I still have to get off the continent one day (Japan is my goal). My friends are a fabulous diverse group of artists, tarot peeps, musicians, moms, librarians, dancers, chefs, jewelry designers, coaches, sacred artists, rabble rousers, and more. Not quite Andy Warhol but close enough!

So yeah. It didn’t quite turn out like that vision I had when I was younger.

But you know what? It’s still pretty cool.

What about you? Are you living the life you envisioned when you were a kid?

This is my new BFF. I call him Squirrely! (I name all squirrels Squirrely by the way.)
