The Hit List - At least plastic animals don’t die

I get asked a lot of curious questions about the little plastic animals I feature on my Six Second Tarot videos over on Instagram. I’ve got a slew of these tiny guys strewn around the office. They make me smile and remind me to keep it playful. (My favorite is Benny the G.O.A.T. in case you need to know. He’s in the picture above.)

This past week, we learned that our beloved cat, TaoZen (pictured above), has a tumor. A few days later, we discovered another one. It might be an understatement to say that my heart disintegrated into ten million fragments. I’m crushed.

He’s had health issues since the day we took him home from the shelter. There have been a few near-death experiences, not to mention the time he went out the window on the third floor to chase a squirrel…and fell to the earth. Nine lives? TaoZen has used up most of them. At 17 years old, he’s now a senior cat-izen, which complicates matters. Surgery is too risky and chemo is a crapshoot.

Despite the circumstacnes, he’s tough. No matter how he might be feeling, the appetite and attitude remain fierce. That makes it hard to determine how long we have with him. It may be weeks, months…if we’re lucky, a year or two. So we wait, try some alternative treatments, and spoil him rotten.

That’s the hard thing about pets. You know you will have to face the day when you’ll lose them. Saying goodbye is gut-wrenching. And even if you welcome new critters in their place, there is always that spot in your heart that reamins for the ones you lost.

Our foucs going forward will be to cherish every single moment with TaoZen. Because unlike little plastic animals, the time with real pets is sweet, precious, and much too short.
