The Hit List - On Stephen King

A few weeks ago (or maybe a month – I can’t remember), I asked the Twitterverse for recommendations for books about writing. I’ve never had formal training so I thought it was about time I either take classes or read about the craft.

When I want to learn something, I usually prefer to start with a great book on the topic. Because I am always trying to master some new thing, I have many reference books sitting around, not to mention the two hundred cookbooks for every cuisine my palate desires.

One of the suggestions that came my way was “On Writing” by Stephen King. Truth: I’ve never read one of his books. I don’t do fiction or horror. I’m familiar with the movie versions but that’s about it.

What on earth would I learn from a scary fiction writer when all I write is non-fiction metaphysical fare?

Turns out…a lot.

I learned about adjectives (whoops…I use them too much), dialogue, setting the stage for a good story, and editing (interestingly…my process is similar to his). But also, I learned about the man. I never really gave much thought to Stephen King. Now…I think of him every day.

His life story sucked me in, his wit kept me hanging around, and his wisdom encouraged me to keep on learning (and reading). By the time I came to the end of the book, I was longing for it to stretch on for just one more page. Maybe eighty.

Heck, I wanted to be Stephen King’s best friend! (Don’t worry, Stephen, I’m not going all Annie Wilkes on ya…). My husband is getting sick of hearing me talk about him (jealous?). Pfft…what does he know (except he has actually read King’s novels…unlike me).

So now I’m thinking about reading one of his books. My son said I should. Even though it’s not my genre, he is my kinda person. Who knows? Maybe I might even learn to enjoy reading fiction.
